Hotel Oceania Le Métropole**** Montpellier: Sleeping Beauty awakens!
This character hotel, ideally located in the centre of Montpellier just 2 minutes’ walk from the Place de la Comédie and and 50 m from the Gare St Roch tram stop, is discovering a new lease of life.
After a year of extensive work, rediscover the 4-star Oceania Le Métropole hotel since 26th December. The hotel successfully blends charm with modernity, with a light touch of exoticism, in the spirit of the great Belle Epoque luxury establishments. Behind its majestic façade, the hotel boasts a brand new area devoted to well-being with a hammam, fitness room, massage and a range of treatments, and the relaxation extends through to the Jacuzzi and swimming pool, bordered by the garden’s palm trees, providing welcome shade for the terrace.
From the hotel’s entrance and lobby, through the cosy English bar and La Closerie restaurant, not forgetting the prestigious lounges, the decoration has been completely restyled to restore all the venue’s former panache and character.
The high ceilings, frescoes featuring romantic cherubs and prestigious parquet flooring have all been totally renovated to re-establish all the prestige of this magnificent 4-star hotel located right in the heart of Montpellier. Light is everywhere – from the broad glass roof of the restaurant to the majestic stairway in the lobby, perfectly showcased by a magnificent and elegant suspension that floats in the air.
As you wander the corridors, escaped budgerigars from the high glass roof are perched along the walls, inviting guests to continue their visit to our 96 rooms and suits. The decoration is personalised for each type of room, paying tribute to the different times of day: the warmth of the southern sunshine, a subtle blend of oranges and purples evoking a stunning late afternoon, or the enveloping gentleness of midnight blue and copper of the setting sun.
The history of the hotel:
The “Métropole” hotel was built in 1898 by architect Thomas Piétri, modelled on the prestigious Belle Epoque hotels on the Côte d’Azur. At that time running water was still unknown: the rest rooms contained buckets that the valets emptied as well as charming earthenware pots stamped with the establishment’s initials. Each room was heated with an open fire, fuelled with wood brought up in large wicker baskets. The lift was hydraulic, and the original, a genuine example of the cabinet-maker’s art dating from 1898, decorates the lobby to this day, serving as an alcove for the business centre.
Operated under the Holiday Inn brand for several years, the hotel was purchased by Oceania Hotels in 2013, when it took the name Oceania Le Métropole**** Montpellier. Oceania group completely renovated the hotel in 2016.
This emblematic flagship of Montpellier’s rich history has played host to numerous celebrities, including the Queen of Italy, Elena of Montenegro, the widow of Victor Emmanuel III, who, forced into exile, spent 2 years at the hotel between 1950 and 1952. One of the hotel’s seminar rooms is named in her honour.
As the guest book attests, many other prestigious guests have stayed here at the Métropole: François Truffaut filmed several scenes of his film “L’homme qui aimait les femmes” here, Ella Fitzgerald and her orchestra stayed at the hotel as well as a galaxy of other artists: Jean Marais, Michel Bouquet, François Perrier, Darry Cowl, Louis Welle, Jacques Villeret, mime artist Marceau who illustrated the guest book with a drawing, Claude Piéplu, Léo Ferré, Charles Aznavour, Jacques Dufhilo, Jean-Jacques Goldman… All have signed their names on the pages of this precious work.
